Rolls-Royce Ship Intelligence – Pushing the boundaries of technology

Its family of products, solutions and services is split into two parts – Intelligent Asset Management and Remote & Autonomous. In recent years, we have invested heavily in these solutions, establishing our Intelligent Analytics Centre in Norway and our Research & Development Centre for Autonomous Ships in Finland. Expanding our partnerships, research collaborations and business networks has also been an important part of our strategy.

Intelligent Asset Management (IAM)

IAM has revolutionised how our customers use their assets as we harness the power of data.

We connect ships to shore securely with Data Management, and also offer Energy Management and Health Management on a common platform to enhance revenue generation and predictability, reduce risk and support environmental compliance. IAM improves performance at both micro (ship) and macro (fleet) level, delivering extensive information to crew and management and allowing better control of operations. Our Intelligent Analytics Centre processes and transforms vast volumes of raw data into meaningful customer insight. Our data and products experts also work closely together, offering unparalleled analysis and guidance to enhance operations. Our end vision is to bring ‘total business optimisation’ to the entire logistics chain.

The first Rolls-Royce Autocrossing system for ferries is now in operation. Fjord1’s full-electric double-ended car ferry Gloppefjord now uses Autocrossing on the short Anda-Lote link on the E39 highway in western Norway. A sister ship, Eidesfjord, has also joined the pioneer on the same route, exploiting technology that simplifies the ferry crossing and significantly cuts energy consumption. A ferry crossing involves automating a distinct series of operations: departure from the linkspan, acceleration to transit speed, transit at constant speed, deceleration on approach to the terminal, and manoeuvring before connecting to linkspan.

Part way to autonomous: At present, the Rolls-Royce Autocrossing system is configured to cover the middle three elements, leaving the docking manoeuvring to the captain. Shortly after leaving the dock, at a designated point the operator can engage the Autocrossing system. At the other end, in the predetermined arrival zone, the captain disengages the system and takes manual control for the docking manoeuvres. If they are incapacitated or forget, the system brings the ferry to a safe stop in the arrival zone, keeping it automatically in a fixed position instead of continuing into the terminal. The captain can also disengage the system and resume command any time during crossing.

Remote and Autonomous Operations. We’re now building on our proven track record to offer increasing degrees of automation to support remote and autonomous solution development. Our Research & Development Centre for Autonomous Ships allows us to carry out navigation projects and develop land-based control centres and the use of AI in future remote and autonomous shipping operations. We believe remote and autonomous ships will be safer, more efficient and cheaper to build and operate. Our solutions will reduce human-machine interaction by automating tasks and processes, while keeping the human at the centre of critical decision-making.
Intelligent Awareness (IA). Our advisory system is revolutionising safety at sea and is the first commercially available product from our Remote & Autonomous portfolio. Using intelligent sensor data fusion, it enhances situational awareness, enabling safer operation in challenging environments and improving operational efficiency. It’s designed to mitigate against navigator risk and is particularly useful when operating vessels at night, in adverse weather conditions, congested waterways or when docking or undocking.
