2015 was the completion year of the transformation of mareTC FVG in a technology cluster, in full conformity with the European definition, with reference to f maritime technologies domain (Blue Growth: shipbuilding, boatbuilding, offshore, transports, infrastructures, logistics, services for navigation and yachting).

mareTC FVG aims to promote and develop and support scientific and applied research, technology development and training, dissemination of results and stimulate innovative activity, the shared use of facilities, the exchange of knowledge and experiences, technology transfer, networking and shared information among companies and research organizations, and internationalization.

mareTC FVG strategy aims to implement activities in the coming years along three paths of equal importance:

  •  give dynamic dimension to the process of entrepreneurial discovery, supporting it with strong animation capabilities, aggregation, and integration;
  • create a highly interconnected system to support the processes of research, innovation and human capital growth, and increasing existing levels of excellence towards the territorial offer of accompanying services;
  • bring the territorial system of maritime technologies to be the protagonist of the national, European and international processes for competitive growth.
  • In essence, the goal of mareTC FVG is the growth of the intangible value of the system of maritime technologies in the region Friuli Venezia Giulia: Sailing to the Blue Growth.

Reference context

The whole activity of mareTC FVG is primarily connected with the regional policy context in Friuli Venezia Giulia (research and innovation smart specialization strategy – RIS3 or S3) and is declined according to the European directions, but also to the wider context of national and international maritime research which is characterized by a high number of initiatives and paths aimed at specific policies or actions.

In summary, considering just the main features, the territorial system represented by mareTC FVG:

  • expresses a central role in the National Technology Cluster for Surface Mobility “Trasporti Italia 2020” wanted by the Italian Ministry of Education as a reference to the issues of surface transport, including the waterways;
  • acts for the aggregation of interests of maritime research in the implementation of the Adriatic-Ionian macro-region;
  • is involved in the BLUEMED Initiative which is promoted by the EU Mediterranean countries and aimes at guiding European action on specific issues in the Mediterranean and, in the Joint Programming Initiative Healthy and productive seas and oceans – JPI Oceans, which aims at developing research on marine and maritime issues of common interest;
  • aims to position itself in some long knowledge networks which are functional to its supporting mission to the internationalization of the reference territory;
  • plays the role of regional cluster of maritime technologies identified in S3 strategy of Friuli Venezia Giulia, namely the actor involved to support the realization of the primary goals of this regionale program.

The above so that the excellent positioning of the maritime sector of FVG could be maintained and improved throughout:

  • strengthening the competitive position by developing new solutions characterized by a mix of costs  and very challenging performances and expanding shares in key markets, with continued investment in research and development activities;
  • the enhancement of specific skills by creating synergy between training institutions and enterprises in the Region and enhancing the cooperation between scientific and industrial skills to transfer knowledge from research to enterprises;
  • the development of new ways of funding by resorting to private (ie. venture capital) or public capital and promoting the self-financing capacity of businesses;
  • promoting a cooperative model of capacity building within the framework of EU cohesion policy.

In this framework, measures to promote research and innovation, to help create a sustainable value chain by leveraging the scientific knowledge and industrial skills of the territory and their possible interactions, will focus on the development trajectories that have been identified during the course of entrepreneurial discovery action, based on relevance and immediacy criteria; they relate to:

  • Design methodologies/tools and development of new products, processes and services;
  • Green technology and energy efficiency;
  • Safety and security technologies.
