The fishing sailing ships will complement the commercial sailing ships. This is the market for Polish engineers and shipyards

A project of a new sailing vessel with an original purpose has appeared on the market. The Quadriga Aqua project is to be the world’s largest commercial sailing ship, combining an environmentally friendly sailing drive with innovative fish farming technology, announces the innovative company Sailing Cargo Inc.

A wooden sailing ship Ceiba, the idea of which was created by the SailCargo team, is under construction. It is a 46 m schooner with 580 m2 sails, says Lynx Cuimond, technical director of the project. It is a cargo ship designed to transport 250 tons of goods, the representatives of the potential operator announce.
Ceiba’s design is based on the shapes of the schooner Ingrid. It can be seen on a colored postage stamp issued by the Aland Islands post office. The ship was based in 1917-1919 in Mariehamn. Its shipowner was Gustaf Adolf Mauritz Erikson, a well-known operator of about a hundred windjammer in the first half of the 20th century.

Quadriga Aqua – new course. Production of fish under sail
Quadriga Aqua with a length of 242 m and a width of 45 m on 4 masts will be able to lift 7,200 m2 of sails. The energy will be provided by generators driven by water and wind jets. They will be supported by solar panels located on the ship’s deck. This will reduce the emission of harmful substances into the environment to 98%, the designers say.
The sailing ship will use completely new solutions in fish farming. The fish will be bred in mobile aquariums. The aquariums will be continuously supplied with fresh seawater through the opening hatches on the hull of the vessel, controlled by the natural pressure and constant movement of the vessel.

Polish designers and shipbuilders have built school sailing ships. Perhaps the time has come to enter the market of commercial sailing ships and fish production. After a whole series of ships built in the former Gdańsk Shipyard, a few years ago in Remontowa Shipbuilding a complete El-Mellah training ship was built for the Algeria Navy. In November 2015, the vessel was launched, and a year later the flag was changed from Polish to Algerian. “El-Mellah” is 110 m long and 14.5 m wide.

Design office Choreń Design & Consulting has also developed the project of the sailing ship “Le Quy Don”. The three-masted barge was commissioned by the Naval Academy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. It was built at the CONRAD Shipyard in Gdańsk. The sailing ship is 67 m long, 10 m wide and has a draft of 3.9 m. The permanent crew will consist of 30 people. The ship can accommodate 80 cadets. The sail area is 1.4 thousand m2

On the basis of the designs of engineer Zygmunt Choreń, the ships were rebuilt, among others the bark of Alexander von Humboldt, the bark of Estelle and the frigate Royal Clipper. Choreń Design & Consulting’s computers also created designs for other sailing ships. The passenger sailing ship Sea Cloud Spirit is being built at the Metalships & Docks shipyard in Vigo, in the Galician port on the Atlantic.
